Abstract

Purpose: This communicative ethnography aimed to explore the changes in perception of personal spaces as an elderly became older. This study was based on two assumptions: space is a primary message systems of a culture; aging body as an expression of space is a meta of physical, personal, social, and super-natural space. The focus of the study was personal dimension of space.

Methods: Data were collected from iterative fieldwork in a clan between Jan, 1990 and April, 2008. The key informants were 9 women and 2 men aged 74~96 at the beginning of the study. Changes in perception of physical and social distances as the informants" body declined in its physical function were analyzed. As the cultural context, spatiality of the informants¡¯ life world such as arrangements of graves and houses were also analyzed.

Results: Informants" personal spaces were classified 4 categories according to perceived distance to others. In these personal spaces included following person; identical being, intimal being, familial being as psychologically and sociologically, and being for warning as an alien.

Conclusion: Informants" perception of personal space were products of personal life experiences with others, domestic cultures, and their physical condition.
